Cicadas Being Used As Jewelry
Sisters Profit From Bug Invasion
GREENWOOD, S.C. — WXII12.com
Twin sisters in South Carolina are using the recent invasion of cicadas to rake in the money.
Since the insects only live four to six weeks, Susan and Sandy Smith have been collecting dead bugs and using their wings to make earrings and the jewelry is flying off the shelves. Not literally, of course.
“A lot of people say, ‘Ew. Yuck. How gross.’ But, you know, it’s not really that bad,” said Sandy Smith.
The earrings sell for $15-$18, depending on whether a decorative bead is attached.
“It’s the ultimate in recycling,” said Sandy.
“Take dead bugs and put them in your ears,” said Susan.
The cicadas can be seen and heard all over Greenwood recently. The insects only come above ground every 13 years, when their life cycle is complete.
Some customers said they wanted the earrings to remember the bugs by.
“I just thought; it was a really cool idea, and I just had to have a pair of them,” said one woman, who bought three pairs. “I just like the little fellas, I guess. I don’t know.”
The Smith sisters said they’ll ship their unique jewelry. They can be reached 864-229-0814 or at twooldbags@hotmail.com.
